Friday at Tiffany Center 7:00 to midnight Pete Petersen & the Porkpie Septet - We're honored to have Pete Petersen kick off this year's exchange. Frankie Manning once called his band "Swingin, baby!" Pete has performed with everyone from Kevin Mahogany to the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, and was a regular member of Lily Wilde's award-winning band for 5 years. Now his own band is starting to get some national attention with a new CD release on Pony Boy Records that's already being raved about by critics. The Porkpie Septet plays the music of Basie, Benny, Hamp, Duke, and of course Prez, along with some hard-swinging originals that sound both nostalgic and fresh at the same time. We're extremely lucky to have such talented musicians living here in Portland! Club 7 - Under the influence of such greats as Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Woody Herman, Eddie Daniels, and Bob Draga, Michael and his quartet have captured the sound of the 30s and 40s and made it their own. 6 Foot Swing - These Spokane natives bridge the gap between 1930 and 2007 with surprisingly contemporary, vintage swing jazz. It's a seeming oxymoron the band pulls off and pulls off well. With the horn section blaring and the piano skipping and jumping over singer Heather O'Brien's smoky voice, the melodic hum of the upright bass and the metallic buzz of the washboard, 6' Swing's music is an intoxicating, driving assemblage. Saturday at McMenamins Crystal Ballroom 7:00 to midnight Midnight Serenaders - This group performs an infectious blend of old-time jazz and early swing, offering up a sweet collection of songs and tunes from the early 20th century. Fronted by guitar slinger/crooner Doug Sammons and ukulele-plinking chanteuse Dee Settlemier, this Portland, Oregon-based sextet energizes audiences, and transports them on a melodic, swing-crazy journey to the dance-happy era known as “the Jazz Age,” where a catchy melody was queen and rhythm ruled the land. Mad Hatton Swing Ensemble - This crazed clarinet wielding band leader has Portland's best behind him supplying the tunes you love to swing to. Last year, Portland was blown away with his special tribute to Benny Goodman in June and his firey performance at the "Alice in Winter Wonderland" Holiday Ball. This band is sure to be your cup of tea. Coucou Bleu & 12th Avenue Hot Club - Fronted by Portland's hottest swing vocalist, this band has a sound that's a dancer's delight. This solid group will make you feel right at home as they soothe your ears with the tunes inspired by Billy Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald as well as other vintage classics. Sunday Afternoon Gypsy Jazz in Lola's Room 4:00 to 7:00 ($5 for those who do not have a weekend pass, 21+ only) Lola's Room is in the same building as the Crystal Ballroom. It has the same bouncy floor! Kung Pao Chickens - Known for their seamless transitions and hot licks, this gypsy jazz quartet is known for satisfying dancers need for speed week after week at the Laurelthirst every Monday for the past 7 years and counting! Djangophiles - For the love of Django, this band is a swing dancers delight. You'll love the solid rhythm, hot clarinet and lead guitar. This group is well balanced and has a great sound. Swing Papillon - This band is the best use of strings in the Northwest. Michael Papillo brings the best in gypsy jazz to his group. You won't find a better group that simply amaze with their instrumentation like ALL the players do in this group. They're simply the best. Sunday night at McMenamins Crystal Ballroom 7:00 to midnight Tony Starlight with Deanna & The Downbeats - We've pulled this master of Swing entertainment out of his supper club to bring him in front of a huge dance floor to please your tappin' toes. Tony Starlight's Supper Club is Portland's top supporter of Live Swing entertainment in Portland. Tony has worked with several musicians and sits in with just about every group that plays at his club. One of those groups, Deanna & The Downbeats, will serve as Tony’s backup band for this show. The band is fronted by sweet and sexy vocalist Deanna Maio, with hot trumpet solos and swingin’ rhythms from The Downbeats. Don’t miss this one-time-only chance to see two of Portland’s best acts on one stage! Jim Beatty Jazz Band - With over fifty years at his art, Beatty has recorded several albums, toured extensively and lectured in schools, as well as appearing in clubs across the United States, Canada, Great Britain, China and Europe. His playing is invariably fresh, smooth, exhilarating and free. As reviewer Steve Blackburn said in Jazz Scene, "He offers a 'tour de force' in style and technique with solos that speak of the great New Orleans players. His playing brings back that 'inspired abandon' of jazz's forefathers ...he should be included among the ranks of the great soloists of the decade".
